A few of the illustrations for Marie-Laure Chevrier's 2021 young-adult book on the historic community of Maillardville, part of the Coquitlam suburb of Vancouver.
All were done in pencil (with only the cover above coloured with watercolour), adjusted in Photoshop to increase the contrast.
Except for the cover, they were drawn to "float" – that is, to fit onto the page without hard edges.
As there are two editions (French and English) where the text will be longer in one than the other – French typically runs about 20% longer than English
– the floating illustrations give the designer a better ability to fit them into the layout.
