Winging It: Travelling Without Reservations

Visitors to my travel
page will know how much we love travelling. My new book
takes a different look at all those trips, and the art of
travelling itself, by recounting tales of the crazy things that
have happened to Christine and me – some great, some not so –
because of 'winging it.' Whether it's a dislike of organizing
ourselves or a feeling like the act of travel should lend
itself to spontaneity, we have rarely booked anything in advance
other than the arrival night in a new country.![]() The stories range pretty much around the world. The longest sections, chapters XI and XII, reflect back on travellers of previous centuries and compare some of their experiences with ours, from backpacking days of our youth to long journeys through historic landscapes. There is not much of the "we saw this, we ate that" kind of writing. Instead, it's the experiences we had – a quick decision leading to a memorable experience. It explores the "Nomadland" world of RV/campervan communities in one chapter. In the Epilogue, I briefly reflect on a philosophy of travelling, comparing our values with those of writers such as Bruce Chatwin. Here are a few page spreads. Many of the drawings are reworkings from my sketchbooks over the years, others reimagine our memories. Included are some historic postcards that I collected along the way in the chapter on our "winter in the Mediterranean." |
